Common beginner mistakes

Most first-time problems have simple fixes. Check these before you give up.

  1. 1

    Forgetting the PL tone

If the repeater does not hear you, check that your transmit tone is 141.3 Hz.

  2. 2

    Wrong offset

Repeater input is 5 MHz above the output. Without the offset, your radio talks on the wrong frequency.

  3. 3

    Bad antenna

A short stock antenna works indoors. Outside, a better antenna or a higher spot makes a big difference.

  4. 4

    Low battery

Weak batteries lower power and drop range. Charge before you head out.

  5. 5

    Talking too soon

Wait a second after pressing the button before you speak so your first words are not cut off.

  6. 6

    Skipping the call sign

Give your call sign at least every 15 minutes and when you finish.

  7. 7

    Too close to the mic

Hold the radio a few inches from your mouth and speak normally.

  8. 8

    Using unlicensed radios

Use radios certified for GMRS and be sure you have a license.
